Vitamin B12 for vegetarians is one of the nutrient gaps Indian clinics keep seeing. B12 is needed for red blood cells and for nerve function. It is found in animal foods, including milk. It is not something dal or spinach can be trusted to supply.
Why this is being searched now
Protein and fibre get most of the social posts. B12 sits beside them because many Indian plates are vegetarian, and low B12 does not always announce itself with a clear symptom at first. Hair fall and tiredness are often blamed on it online before any lab report exists. Those symptoms overlap with iron deficiency, thyroid issues, poor sleep and low calories. A guess is not a diagnosis.
How much is advised
The ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended dietary allowance for vitamin B12 in adults is about 2.2 micrograms a day. That is a maintenance figure for healthy people, not the treatment dose for someone whose blood level is already low.
Indian foods that contain B12
- Milk, curd and paneer: the main everyday sources in a lacto-vegetarian kitchen. A token splash of milk in tea is not the same as a proper serving of milk or curd.
- Eggs: useful if you eat them
- Fish, chicken and meat: clear sources if they are part of your pattern
- Fortified foods or a supplement: often needed for vegans, and sometimes for vegetarians whose dairy intake is low. Use these with clinical advice, not as a random high-dose trend
Sprouts, moringa, mushrooms from a normal shop, and fermented batter are not reliable B12 strategies. Some fermented or algae products are marketed for B12, but the form is not consistently active for humans. Do not build a plan on that claim.
When a test matters more than another food reel
Ask your doctor about a B12 test if tiredness, tingling, balance issues, a smooth sore tongue, or memory change are persistent, and also if you eat little or no dairy and no animal food. People on long-term metformin for diabetes, or on acid-reducing medicines for a long stretch, are groups in whom lower B12 has been reported. That is a reason to test, not a reason to stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
If the report shows deficiency, the correction dose is a medical decision. Food remains useful after levels are restored, so the gap does not open again.
Plain rule: dairy or eggs most days if you are vegetarian, a test if symptoms or a vegan pattern make deficiency likely, and a doctor-set dose if the number is low.
Common questions
How much vitamin B12 do adults need?
ICMR-NIN 2020 sets the adult recommended dietary allowance at about 2.2 micrograms a day.
Which vegetarian foods contain B12?
Milk, curd, paneer and cheese contain B12. Eggs do too if you eat them. Plant foods such as dal, vegetables and fruit do not reliably provide B12.
Can tiredness alone prove B12 deficiency?
No. Tiredness, tingling and poor focus have many causes. A blood test is the way to know.
Important: Food can support B12 intake. A diagnosed deficiency is treated with the dose your doctor sets, which is often higher than food alone can provide.
Need a personalised diet plan?
If you need a vegetarian, vegan, thyroid or diabetes diet plan that also covers B12, the dairy portion and any supplement depend on your reports. Different people need different diet plans.
