High fibre Indian diet: what the fibremaxxing trend gets right

Fibre is worth raising. It does not need a new powder, and it should not jump overnight. By Dt. Shifali Garg.

A high fibre Indian diet is getting attention under the name fibremaxxing. The idea is simple: eat more fibre than a refined-flour, low-vegetable day provides. An October 2026 urban India report carried by India Today found that people know about protein and fibre, yet intake still lags. In that report, 65 percent of adults born in or before 1980 were under the fibre amount used as the benchmark, compared with 58 percent of younger adults. Awareness is not the same as the plate.

What the trend gets right, and what it skips

It gets this right: you do not need to ban roti or buy an imported mix to eat more fibre. It skips the pace. Going from a low-fibre week to a very high-fibre day causes gas, cramps and sometimes worse constipation if water intake stays low.

Adult targets in public guidance commonly fall around 25 to 40 grams a day. The exact number depends on which reference you read. You do not need to hit a perfect gram count on day one.

Two kinds of fibre

  • Soluble fibre dissolves in water, forms a soft gel, and is one reason oats, dal, fruit and isabgol can support fullness, cholesterol and steadier sugar when the rest of the diet is sensible
  • Insoluble fibre adds bulk. It is the fibre in wheat bran, many vegetables and the skins of some whole grains. It helps stool move, if you also drink enough fluid

Isabgol is a soluble fibre with its own how-to guide: how to take isabgol. It is an add-on, not the whole diet.

High fibre foods already in Indian kitchens

  • Dals and pulses: moong, masoor, chana, rajma, lobia
  • Vegetables at both main meals, including gourds, beans, carrots and leafy greens you digest well
  • Fruit with edible skin or seeds, such as guava, apple or pear, in a portion that fits your sugar plan
  • Whole wheat roti instead of maida snacks as the default
  • Millets such as ragi, jowar or bajra for one meal if you enjoy them. Portions still count: see the millet guide

How to raise fibre without a bad week

  1. Add one extra vegetable serving or one fruit first, not five new foods.
  2. Keep pulses if you already eat them. Soak and cook them well if whole beans cause gas.
  3. Drink water across the day. Fibre without fluid can harden stool.
  4. Give your gut several days before the next increase.
  5. If you have inflammatory bowel disease, a narrowing of the bowel, or a kidney diet, ask before you load up on bran, isabgol or large salads.

Useful version of the trend: more dal, vegetables, fruit and whole grains, added gradually, with water. Not a one-day fibre challenge.

Common questions

What is fibremaxxing?

It is a social-media name for deliberately eating more fibre. The useful part is adding dal, vegetables, fruit and whole grains. The unhelpful part is jumping to a very high intake in one day.

How much fibre do adults need?

Common adult guidance sits around 25 to 40 grams a day, depending on the reference used. Many urban Indian diets still fall short of whatever target is being used.

Which Indian foods are high in fibre?

Dals and pulses, vegetables, fruit with skin such as guava, whole wheat, and millets such as ragi, jowar and bajra. Oats and isabgol add soluble fibre when they suit you.

Important: More fibre helps many people with fullness and bowel regularity. A sudden large increase can cause bloating, and some gut or kidney conditions need a different plan.

Need a personalised diet plan?

If you need a high fibre plan for constipation, weight, diabetes, PCOS or cholesterol, the foods and the pace depend on your stomach and reports. Different people need different diet plans.
