What is non-alcoholic fatty liver?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver in people who drink little or no alcohol. Over time, it can affect how the liver works. This blog covers practical dietary guidelines and a sample meal plan that can support everyday management alongside medical care.

Food choices, portion control, hydration, and regular physical activity are central to supporting liver health in NAFLD.

Dietary guidelines for non-alcoholic fatty liver

  • Drink plenty of water through the day, about 8-10 glasses or 2-2.5 litres daily.
  • Aim for 30-45 minutes of physical activity each day.
  • Avoid alcohol and quit smoking.
  • Eat frequent meals in controlled portions.
  • Avoid processed food, sugary products, deep-fried foods, and non-vegetarian food.
  • Include healthy fats from flaxseeds, walnuts, almonds, chia seeds, and fenugreek seeds (methi); fibre from raw fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges, lemon, mosambi, and grapefruit; vegetables; whole grains like oats and barley; soy products like tofu and soymilk; and green tea.
  • Introduce horse gram, lemon, garlic, tomato, black pepper, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and curry leaves, and use them regularly in the diet.
